I Just Lost Someone

A gentle starting place for the first hours, days, and weeks after a loss.

Take one breath. Then take one small step.

If your loss is recent, everything may feel unreal, overwhelming, or painfully quiet. You do not have to figure out your whole future today.

What to do today

  • Stay close to someone safe if possible.
  • Drink water and try to eat something small.
  • Write down immediate decisions so you do not have to hold everything in your mind.
  • Let someone help you make calls or handle practical details.
  • Pray honestly, even if all you can say is, “Lord, help me.”

What you may feel

Shock, numbness, anger, fear, guilt, confusion, relief, exhaustion, and deep sadness can all be part of grief. Feeling these things does not mean you are failing. It means you are human.

Lord, be near to me in this moment. Give me strength for this hour, comfort for this pain, and the grace to take the next step. Amen.
